smart-me LoRa Gateway

Foreword

LoRa stands for Long Range and comprises a radio technology with a long range and low data throughput. This communication medium is particularly suitable for the wireless transmission of meter readings in the fields of sanitary and heating technology.

Compared to Wireless M-Bus, which was developed primarily for meter data transmission, LoRa impresses with its significantly greater range.

It requires fewer gateways per building to reach all the meter readings in the individual apartments.

General information on the compatibility of energy meters and sensors

With the smart-me LoRa gateway solution, it is important that the sensors and energy meters are included in the compatibility list. If these are not listed, there is currently no compatibility.

Contact us, an integration of your meter or sensor is possible in the near future. Write an e-mail to support@smart-me.com with the designation “New LoRa device”

The smart-me gateway solution generally supports the following energy meter and sensor types:

Energy meters:

Sensors:

Compatibility limitations

For technical reasons, no electricity meters with LoRa are supported. The transmission rate and data reliability for load profile billing in accordance with smart-me Billing is not sufficiently high due to the way LoRa works.

Therefore, only meter data is recorded via LoRa with which sufficient security and functionality can be guaranteed.

Data quality and failure coverage

LoRa technology is based on capturing and sending data. The LoRaWAN gateways do not have a data memory and therefore cannot reconstruct incomplete data records as is usually the case with smart-me products.

For this reason, LoRa is not equally suitable for all energies.

For heat / water and gas, a short-term outage or a data gap is generally not a major hurdle and can be billed smoothly if rectified in the medium term.

In the case of electricity and its tariffing in 15-minute intervals, medium-term rectification is not easy, which is why LoRa is not suitable for the transmission of electricity data and its billing in our view.

For this reason, smart-me has developed its own hardware to ensure the necessary data security and seamlessness for electricity.
